Do Steps, Workouts, or Burned Calories Count?

Your calorie target doesn't change with the day's activity, and Gravl Macros doesn't add the calories your watch or a workout app says you burned. Your training still counts, through your weekly check-in.

Short answer: your calorie target doesn't change based on today's activity. Gravl Macros doesn't add calories from your watch, Apple Health, Health Connect, or Gravl Workouts.

Your training still counts, though. It just shows up a different way.

Your training is already counted

Gravl Macros learns how much you really burn from two things you track: what you eat and how your weight changes. When you train more, your body burns more, and Macros picks that up in one of two ways:

  • Your weight starts dropping faster. Macros sees you're burning more than it thought.
  • You eat more and your weight stays the same. Macros sees that too: eating more without gaining means you're burning more.

Either way, your weekly check-in adjusts your target to match, usually within two to three weeks. That's why there's no "add exercise calories" option: your training is already in the number, and adding a workout by hand would count it twice.

On a Manual plan, your target stays at the numbers you set.

Why we don't add the calories your watch shows

The "calories burned" number on your watch or in a workout app is an estimate, worked out from your heart rate, your movement, and averages for someone your size. It can be off by a lot. If you eat back a number that's too high, the deficit you planned shrinks or disappears without you noticing.

Your weight isn't an estimate. It shows what your body actually did with the food you ate. How your expenditure is calculated walks through the math.

Want more food on training days?

If your hard days are predictable, like a long session every Saturday, set them as high-calorie days. You'll get more calories on those days and a little less on the others, so your weekly total stays the same.

What about steps?

Steps are read once, during setup, to estimate your starting activity level. After that, your real data takes over. Sync with Apple Health and Health Connect lists everything Macros reads and writes.

Using Gravl Workouts too?

The two apps share your account and your weight history, so a weigh-in logged in either app counts the same. Your workout sessions and the calories Workouts estimates for them stay in Workouts. Is my data shared with Gravl Workouts? has the details.
