Sooner or later everyone does it: types their age, height, weight and activity level into an online TDEE calculator, gets a number, and finds that Gravl Macros says something different. What a calculator is actually doing
A TDEE calculator is a population formula. Researchers measured the resting metabolism of a large group of people, fitted an equation to age, sex, height and weight, and published it. The calculator multiplies that resting figure by an activity factor you pick from a short list.
Every input is either a body measurement or a self-description. Nothing in it is a measurement of your energy use. Two people who type the same numbers get the same answer, whether or not they burn the same.
That is fine as a starting point. It is not fine as a truth, because real people are spread out around the average.

The spread in that chart is not exaggerated. Between people with the same size and the same self-reported activity, expenditure routinely varies by several hundred calories a day. Most of the difference comes from things a calculator cannot see:
- Everyday movement. Standing, fidgeting, walking around the office, pacing on the phone. It is invisible, it differs enormously between people, and it is often the biggest reason two similar bodies burn differently.
- Honest activity levels. "Moderately active" means something different to everyone who ticks it. Most people overestimate.
- Adaptation. Months into a diet your body quietly burns a little less. A calculator gives the same number in week one and week thirty.
- You, specifically. Genetics, hormones, sleep, and how efficiently you move. Population formulas average all of it away.

That last row matters. Gravl's number is only as honest as your diary. It is more accurate to say the app measures your expenditure as revealed by what you log. If you consistently leave out a few hundred calories of snacks, the estimate will land a few hundred calories low, and it will do so with a straight face. Why Gravl starts from a formula anyway
On day one the app knows nothing about your weight trend, so it does exactly what a calculator does: it estimates your resting metabolism from your lean mass, scales it by your daily activity, exercise frequency and cardio experience, and shows you the result. "But my expenditure is way lower than the calculator"
This is the most common message we get, and there are three honest explanations. Two are about you, one is about the diary.
- You move less than the label you picked. "Moderately active" plus a desk job and a car is often closer to a calculator's "sedentary" than people expect. Gravl is not judging; it is reporting.
- You have been dieting for a while. Expenditure drifts down during a long deficit. That is physiology, not failure, and it is exactly why an adaptive estimate exists. Diet breaks are one way to manage it.
- Food is going unlogged. Oils, sauces, tastes while cooking, the second handful. Each is small; together they can be several hundred calories a day, and every one of them registers as "expenditure lower than you thought". If this rings true, tighten the logging for two weeks and watch the number rise.
The reverse case, an expenditure well above the calculator, is usually good news: you move more than a formula assumes.
